Matrescence explores the profound changes experienced during pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period, and beyond through the works of fifteen exceptional artists. Featuring photography, video, painting, fiber arts, embroidery, sculpture, and installation, the exhibition addresses themes of identity, postnatal care, miscarriage, caretaking, familial relationships, and the decolonization of motherhood. Spanning from the Boston area to the Northeast and the West Coast, these artists challenge societal norms surrounding artistry and motherhood, highlighting both the historical and contemporary challenges faced by artist mothers. The exhibition invites viewers to reflect on and gain insight into the complexities of motherhood, celebrating the resilience and creativity of artist mothers.
